How to get the best shaveTo get a really close shave, some people swear you should always shave with the direction of hair growth others recommend shaving against it. I think it really comes down to a number of key factors.

1. The type of razor you are using, meaning electric razor or blade, single, double , triple blade and so on

2. Making sure what ever you use is sharp and is used in conjunction with a lubricant of some kind

3. The kind of preparation you plan on doing, whether you plan on exfoliating, soaking your face or particular body part in warm water for a period of time

4. Your Racial background, African Americans tend to suffer from razor bumps more easily than people of other racial backgrounds due to their curly hair having a tendency to grow back into the face “ouch”

5. And finally the angle and speed at which you are shaving, different tools require and perform differently depending upon the angle you attack the whiskers and whether you are in a rush to get it done or not.

When shaving, pull the skin straight and taut with one hand and then shave using the other hand. If you have to apply too much pressure, then more than likely your razor is too dull. Manufacturers of disposable razors usually recommend you shave with the direction of hair growth, however, some people feel they get a closer shave by going the opposite direction. If you choose this method be careful to make sure you really take the time to soak the skin as well apply shaving cream or gel. This will reduce the risk of ingrown hairs or razor burn. Each person really has to decipher which method will work best for them based on their particular hair growth.

For legs long upward smooth and steady strokes are best. For the underarms where the hair grows typically in all directions, you’ll want to use short side to side and up and down strokes. Shave upwards on the pubic area (see personal shaving section).

Constantly rinse and clean your shaving tools in warm water making sure the blades or foils are clean of debris. Wherever you apply blade to skin you should also be using some kind of lubricant such as shaving gel or foam. For the tough to reach ingrown hairs, pull them out with tweezers and for longer errant strands you can use the pop-up trimmer of the electric razor.

For the most part, go slowly- take your time, especially when using the straight blade or disposable razors. A good angle between a disposable razor and the skin is estimated to be about 30 degrees. Electric razors on the other hand tend to be around 45 degrees, depending upon whether they are foil (Remington) or rotating cutter based shavers (Braun).
